Shelley
So, what exactly was this mysterious former incarnation of Orlando's? Well, it seems that, having been offered the chance to release a single on twee-er-than-thou superindie label Sarah Records, the besuited ones felt that it didn't exactly fit in with their scheme for world domination; thus was the Reproduction Is Pollution EP, their first release, issued under the name of Shelley (possibly a contraction of Shelmerdine from the classic novel by the name of......you guessed it). And a very fine thing it is too.
The first and title track sees Dickon wholeheartedly opposing procreation (hooray) and envisioning a legion of people who "didn't miss the point" to a soundtrack of jangly guitars. It's special. The other two tracks are "Prejudice" (containing their most touchingly and simply romantic lyrics to date, bar possibly "Don't Sleep Alone") and "Hero", an exquisite slice of beauty which never fails to completely halt the course of whatever important work I'm supposed to be doing. It's simply lovely.
And note that a few of Orlando's "quotes" originated here: I've never felt at home...at home made its first appearance in "Hero", and I've outgrown age in "Reproduction Is Pollution"...
The lyrics are (my transcriptions; you have been warned):
Reproduction Is Pollution
I have nothing in common with those who think having babies is The Way Out; "We've got the house, we've got our age and each other- let's BREED. Birth was a bad mistake, childhood and adolescence were terrible ideas, but we survived them. Now let's see if we can do better with a child of our own."
Steep yourself in yourself...there is no need for someone else.
"Let's fill it with our beliefs and values, and foist it upon a world where the sun is getting whiter every day; where poverty is soaring, and cancer, and homelessness, and cancer, and AIDS, and cancer, and pollution, and yes- and also the Apocalypse in our lifetime. We just want to share it with a child of our own." Don't talk to me about "NATURAL INSTINCT"- you've spat on Nature for far too long.
Steep yourself in yourself...there is no need for someone else.
It's time we made our apologies to the poor old planet and wiped the slate clean. Steep yourself in yourself- your own life is enough. There is no need for any more. We're worth so much more than just the middle people between the PAST LOT and the NEXT LOT. And maybe in time they'll see us as the ones who didn't miss the POINT.
Steep yourself in yourself...there is no need for someone else.
And even though in time we may find ourselves slipping uncontrollably into the habits and the mannerisms of our parents, we'll never quite be the BABY MACHINES they WANT us to be. Whilst those around us chose to Settle Down and die, we went on, and played and wrote and fought; and didn't notice anything as meaningless as age- because we're beyond all THAT now, we have OUTGROWN AGE.
Steep yourself in yourself...there is no need for some..one..else...

Prejudice
I like (?) and drink too much to try and stave off my Self. When you worked nearer here, I was myself with you.
Hiding (hiding...hiding) forever
Watching (watching...watching) forever
Waiting (waiting...waiting) forever
Hoping (hoping...hoping) forever
And ever and ever and EVER
At first glance you could be a boy or girl. This feels nice though it seems the only way I know you.
Longing (longing...longing) forever
Reaching (reaching...reaching) forever
Wishing (wishing...wishing) forever
Yearning (yearning...yearning) forever
And ever and ever and EVER
Prejudice...I don't want forever...I just want a little NOW...
Time is running out...I just want a little NOW.
[Speaks: "Oh, I just started to improvise......!"]

Hero
Hero- under the light
Hero- under the light
You've got too much spare time
Far too much spare time
And you can't do anything right
In your life.
Hero- always unsure
Hero- always unsure
It's not worth waiting for
No, it's not worth waiting for
If you leave your plans at the door
Can't you see you're so like me?
You're so like me.
And if this is home...then I have no home.
I've never felt at home...at home.
Hero... (under the light)
Hero... (under the light)
You've got too much spare time
Far too much spare time
And you can't do anything right
In your life
Hero... (always unsure)
Hero... (always unsure)
It's not worth waiting for
No, it's not worth waiting for

If you leave your plans at the door
Can't you see you're so like me?
You're so like me.
