INTRODUCING: ORLANDO
From Smash Hits
WHO ARE THEY?
Tim Chipping and Dickon Edwards, both 24.Tim changes his name when he feels like it and Dickon can't understand why some people think his name's a bit rude.
WHEN DID THEY GET IT TOGETHER?
Orlando was a mythical idea of Dickon's that came to fruition three years ago.The two ex-drama students were put together by mutual friends three years ago because they both loved and studied pop. They spent a year perfecting their 'material' and played their first gig in October last year.
WHAT'S SO SPECIAL ABOUT THEM?
They were signed after their first gig by the bloke who discovered Pulp,The Cranberries and The Smiths, who wouldn't take no for an answer.Although they've been playing festivals and hanging around in Camden, they're pure pop.Orlando are writing songs for Boyzone's next album and are masters of the tune-soaked chart-raider.Their debut single,Just For A Second,is out now!
WHAT ELSE DO THEY HAVE TO SAY FOR THEMSELVES?
"We hated indie music and loved pop," says Tim. "We wanted to be part of the Take That thing and not part of the indie ghetto."
"Pop music was more important to us than anything when we were growing up," Dickon continues. "People should love Oasis and Ant & Dec."
"We were on Top Of The Pops without having had a record out,or a deal,or having played a gig," Tim explains. "I had a friend at the BBC and,in the middle of the night,we would sneak in and film ourselves. We've got the tape!"
"We want to be a national institution," he adds. "We want to be Madonna." (Eh?!)
